We are seeking a Personal Lines Underwriter or Senior Personal Lines Underwriter (to be determined based on skills, background, and experience) to support our growth initiatives. If you are a results oriented, experienced underwriter preferably with a background underwriting in NY, and are willing to work directly in our Syracuse office, you are the right candidate for us!

Job Summary: 

This position is responsible for the acceptance, continuation, proper pricing, placement, and termination of risks or other policy limitations.  Determines risk acceptability by reviewing and approving new business, renewals, endorsements and cancellations.  Reviews and approves new business declinations, reinstatements and non-renewals.  Participates in a sustained program of personal field visits with agents.  Processes workflow in assigned territory and acts as a backup for other underwriters.  Accepts or declines agency accommodation requests outside of the agent’s authority.   Obtains, reviews and analyzes policyholder questionnaires, motor vehicle records, property surveys and other informational sources as may be available and takes appropriate action.  Reviews rollovers for underwriting guidelines acceptability standards.  Communicates, both verbally and in writing, with policyholders, agents, marketing representatives and others as necessary for proper servicing of insureds’ policies.  Manages customer and/or agents’ questions and complaints and applies corrective action as needed to rectify the situation within the range of the assigned responsibility and authority.  Handles routine underwriting phone calls and correspondence. Reviews agents’ books of business and makes recommendations to improve profitability and growth.  This includes executing agreed to action plans and monitoring/reporting on outcomes.


Role Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, insurance, risk management, economics or finance preferred
  • 6+ years  personal lines underwriting experience for consideration for the senior level
  • General personal lines product knowledge required
  • Demonstration of self-development through attainment of professional insurance designations such as CPCU or other related insurance certification desirable
  • Strong Microsoft office skills
  • Excellent customer service and written/verbal communication skills
  • Good judgment and decision making with a drive for results
  • Ability to collaborate with peers to reach goals as well as work well independently
  • Strong work ethic with the desire to succeed
